Our Friday morning commute features partially to completely snow covered roads for much of the Northland. Light snow showers taper off from west to east through the morning, then cloudy skies linger with highs in upper 20s to low 30s. The breezy east wind will continue through the weekend, creating periods of blowing snow and reduced visibility as we enter a very snowy stretch.
A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Pine, Carlton, St. Louis, Lake, and Cook Co. from noon Saturday until 6 pm Sunday. The Watch begins at 6 am for western counties including Koochiching, Itasca, Aitkin, and Crow Wing, and lasts until 6 am Monday for Douglas, Bayfield, and Ashland Co.
Lake effect snow may begin along the North Shore tonight. The widespread snow takes over the Northland from the west through Saturday morning and afternoon. Heavy snow will be possible Saturday, Saturday night, and into Sunday morning. The responsible weather system will exit the region to the southeast on Sunday, allowing us to dry out from the northwest in the evening.
As of now, total accumulation surpassing 6” is expected for much of North Central Minnesota and extending east across areas surrounding Lake Superior. The highest accumulation will be locally along the North Shore where 12-18” will be possible. Accumulation potential drops off looking along the international border and moving south into east central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, but at least 4” is still expected in these areas.
