Our Wednesday is cool and clear. Kids wait at the bus stop to subzero wind chills. We’ll still want the hat and gloves this afternoon as highs stay in the mid-20s under mostly sunny skies. Cloud cover remains minimal tonight, allowing temps to fall back into single digits above and below zero.
We continue to track a system impacting the Northland Thursday and Friday. Thursday begins cool and clear, then clouds return through the day and widespread snow arrives in time for a slick evening commute. Rain will be in the mix looking south of Lake Superior, cutting into accumulation in east central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. Friday may have lingering snow and rain in the morning, but the more impactful period would be in the afternoon and evening as snow and rain returns from the south. Heavy snow is possible Friday night before snow tapers off to the southeast.
As of this morning, there are still two distinct forecast scenarios. The one we’re leaning toward keeps the bulk of Friday’s impacts south of the Twin Ports. The second scenario has consistently brought heavier accumulation further north, which is why there is still uncertainty in accumulation potential. As of now, we expect a widespread 2-4” for much of northeast Minnesota with locally higher amounts possible. Amounts drop off looking north of the Iron Range toward the international border. 3-6” potential begins at the Head of Lake Superior. Greater than 6” is possible for much of northwest Wisconsin and along the South Shore of Lake Superior.
