Brandon Weatherz: Critical fire weather today

A number of weather headlines remain in effect across the Northland today. We look to the South Shore one last time for a Winter Weather Advisory for Ashland and Iron Co. and Winter Storm Warning in Gogebic Co. until 1 pm. Lake effect snow continues through the morning, then finally comes to an end this afternoon and evening. Additional accumulation of 3-6″ is possible locally, while parts of the same counties pick up nothing. The North Shore keeps a Wind Advisory until 1 pm as gusts approach 50 mph. Widespread winds of 10 to 20 mph and relative humidity as low as 14% will allow fires to spread rapidly and become difficult to control, leading to a Red Flag Warning for much of northern Minnesota from 12 pm to 8 pm.
Temperatures get a slight boost today, but we still find cooler conditions looking east and warmer conditions west with highs ranging from upper 30s near Ironwood to upper 50s in north central Minnesota. Tonight is mostly clear with lows in upper 20s and low 30s. Tomorrow will feature mostly cloudy skies and a few showers across the Arrowhead. Highs range from upper 40s to near 70. Winds shift out of the east through the day, then an east wind will limit how much shoreline communities warm up each day through the weekend. Isolated showers are expected Wednesday night and Thursday, then periodic rain is expected Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Strong winds linger today with lake effect once more impacting the South Shore. Dry air allows fires to spread rapidly in Minnesota.
