Brandon Weatherz: Thunderstorm chances start today

A warm and unsettled weather pattern will be with us into the weekend. We don’t have rain in the forecast that will bring widespread relief from the dry conditions, but rather hit-or-miss showers and thunderstorms that will be found in the Northland each day through the rest of the week, mostly in the afternoon and evening hours.
Today features a morning round of showers struggling to hold form moving in from the west, and more numerous showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. Some of these storms may be strong with locally heavy rain, gusty winds, and hail up to 1” in diameter. This potential begins from Brainerd to Grand Rapids around 4 pm and moves east of there into the evening with Duluth on the eastern edge of the severe threat. Storms weaken after 8 pm.
Highs today range from mid-70s to mid-80s. Lake influence will play out similarly to how it has the last several days with a southeast wind keeping temps in the 50s at lower elevations closer to Lake Superior. Lows stay in 50s to 60s tonight with showers and thunderstorms tapering off mostly before midnight leaving behind partly cloudy skies. Wednesday will see most areas in the 80s with partly sunny skies and afternoon thunderstorms. Inland communities return to 80s each day through the weekend with cooler conditions consistently found near Lake Superior.
