Brandon Weatherz: Quiet today before winds pick up and rain arrives

A patchwork of clouds have kept many areas in the 40s overnight while clear spots including parts of the Arrowhead head out the door to 30s. Cloud cover thins out a bit as we head through the day with times of sun. Highs range from upper 40s to mid-50s looking north to south across the Northland. Winds develop out of the east today around 5-10 mph. The east wind will direct light lake effect rain chances along the North Shore tonight, then periods of lake effect showers will remain possible locally from the Head of the Lake up the shore Thursday, Thursday night, and into Friday.
Widespread rain will build into the region from the south Thursday night into Friday staying mostly along and south of U.S. Hwy 2. Accumulation increases moving south with parts of east central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin possibly picking up more than 1”. Lake effect rain may linger around the Head of Lake Superior and along the South Shore on Saturday with additional accumulation remaining light.
Winds will also be a contender with this system. An east wind picks up near 15 mph on Thursday, then Friday will see winds near Lake Superior sustained at 20-30 mph with gusts near 40. A Gale Watch is in effect with waves expected to build to 8 to 13 feet in the Twin Ports. Saturday will still be breezy out of the northeast, allowing swells to linger.
Temperatures see little change in the days ahead from what we’ve seen lately. Patchy frost is possible tonight with lows ranging from mid-30s to low 40s. Tomorrow will see highs into low to upper 50s, then Friday is a touch cooler with mid-40s to low 50s. Saturday will be similarly cool, then Sunday features 50s for most with mid-40s looking east near Ironwood.
