River Talk: Restoring the St. Louis River

As part of the Lake Superior National Estuary Research Reserve's River Talk series, a presentation was held on the history and ongoing transformation of the St. Louis River.

The Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve has hosted a River Talk series during the cooler season for over a decade. Each River Talk has a different guest speaker presenting on a specific topic.

“I think that people want to know about what’s happening in a place that they value that’s right out their front door, and so they come because they can hear from out of the horse’s mouth. They can hear what’s really happening and why,” explained Director Deanna Erickson. “That helps you feel empowered and more connected to the place you live.”

The second installment of this season’s River Talk series was held on Wednesday evening. St. Louis River Alliance Executive Director Kris Eilers presented, “Restored Connection to a River in Recovery.” There was a summary of the history of the St. Louis River Estuary and the ongoing transformation that includes improved access to the water.

There will be two more River Talks this season, hosted at the Lake Superior Estuarium:

  • Wednesday, January 8: Chigami-Ziibing: Ojibwe Placenames and Perspectives along the St. Louis River Estuary. Naawakwe William Howes III, Gegaanzikiged, Gegaanzongejig Ji-Aabadak Ojibwemowin, Fond du Lac Language & Culture Program
  • Wednesday, February 12: Returning Good Fire to Superior Forests. Panelists from the City of Superior and the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa wildland fire program
