Brandon Weatherz: Cooler, breezy, and gloomy for the weekend

Our Friday begins with areas of fog to contend with for the morning commute. An early round of isolated thunderstorms moves northward across the Iron Range and Arrowhead toward the Canadian border. Additional isolated thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and evening around the Head of Lake Superior and extending south across east central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. No severe storms are expected, but a stray storm may be capable of small hail, gusty winds, and a brief downpour.
An east wind picks up through the day to hold temps by Lake Superior in the 60s and result in a high risk for rip currents. A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect from 2 pm to 10 pm, and additional rip current concerns are expected Saturday and Sunday as a gusty east wind remains constant. Highs away from the lake reach low to mid-70s today.
A slow moving weather system is on track to bring periods of showers over the weekend with the wettest conditions expected to stay west of the Twin Ports in central Minnesota. Accumulation surpassing 1” is expected for Brainerd, Aitkin, Moose Lake, and Hinckley. We currently expect around 0.75” for the Twin Ports, and amounts fall going east across the Arrowhead and northwest Wisconsin. Areas of fog return tonight and may prove to be stubborn Saturday, particularly along the North Shore. Visibility may be inhibited for fall colors viewing. A dry weather pattern with temps consistently a touch on the mild side sets up next week.
