Brandon Weatherz: Showers and storms return Friday

We step out the door comfortably to temperatures in mid-50s to low 60s. Ashland saw a daily record warm low on Wednesday of 59, and more record warm lows are possible in the region Friday through Monday as we continue to bottom out in 50s and 60s. These lows are closer to the daily average high, which is 62 in Duluth today. High temperatures will be in low to upper 60s today with cloudy skies and a passing sprinkle possible. Friday will have a range of highs from 63 in Hibbing to 75 in Siren.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms fill out the Northland from the west beginning Friday morning. Heavy rain and high localized totals are possible, and given recent moisture, we could see minor flooding. The Twin Ports are on the edge of that potential which fills out central and northern Minnesota. An isolated severe thunderstorm is possible from Grand Rapids to Aitkin and south of there with large hail and damaging winds possible.
Widespread rain gradually moves eastward across the region Friday night into early Saturday morning. We should stay generally quiet during the day Saturday, then there’s a 30% chance for showers and thunderstorms Saturday night into Sunday morning. Saturday features upper 60s to upper 70s from north to south and Sunday will see mid-70s to low 80s. Lakeside areas stay cooler both days.
