Sunday’s record setting heat is lingering in the region for our Labor Day, but temps won’t be quite as high. We still have a Heat Advisory for east central Minnesota, South St. Louis County, and into northwest Wisconsin from 3 to 7 pm with heat index values approaching 98°. A key difference today will be a southeast wind spreading cooler conditions across the North Shore and into the Twin Ports. Highs should range from low 70s at Park Point Beach to near 87 at the Duluth International Airport. Highs reach upper 80s to mid-90s for inland areas. A few showers are possible this morning and afternoon, mostly from Grand Rapids to the Iron Range and north of there.
Tonight is another toasty one with lows in mid-60s to low 70s under mostly clear skies. Tuesday sends highs back into mid-80s to low 90s for most, then a passing cold front drags highs down into the 60s by Wednesday. It’ll then continue to feel like September the rest of the week into the weekend. Tuesday’s cold front will be the focus for potentially severe thunderstorms. Scattered storms will develop in the afternoon and gradually exit overnight.
The main hazards will be large hail and damaging winds, but locally heavy rain brings a low risk for flash flooding, and there’s a low risk for a tornado as well. Showers linger during the day Wednesday, then the rest of the forecast is shaping up to be on the dry side. Widespread accumulation for Tuesday through Wednesday is expected to be around .25” to .75”, but locally higher amounts are expected where thunderstorms setup.
