Brandon Weatherz: Mild Valentine’s Day followed by a cool down
Our Wednesday starts with a fresh dusting in many areas leading to slippery stretches. The overnight round of snow has wrapped up for the most part and the next round of snow builds into the region from the south late this afternoon. Snow showers try to reach as far north as a line from Brainerd to Solon Springs to Ironwood arriving from the west after 3 pm and expanding east across northern Wisconsin through the evening. Snow tapers off overnight. Less than an inch of snow is expected along and south of the line mentioned. 1-2” is possible for southern parts of Washburn and Sawyer County and near Butternut.
Light snow may also graze the international border overnight into early Thursday morning. After that, snow chances in the Northland should be limited to lake effect for the South Shore. Periods of snow will be possible there Thursday into the weekend as we enter a cooler period accompanied by winds generally out of the west northwest with the greatest accumulations in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
Temps start off mild mostly in the mid-20s today, then highs this afternoon range from upper 20s by International Falls to mid-30s in the Twin Ports to near 40 for Ashland. Tonight’s lows will be in teens to low 20s. Thursday is blustery and cooler with highs in teens to mid-20s. By Friday, morning lows could dip below zero in the cool areas of northern Minnesota and highs stay in the teens across the board. Temps gradually recover through a rather quiet weekend. Saturday may bring a few showers to the Arrowhead.
