Brandon Weatherz: Cold Friday followed by a warmer weekend
Our Friday features the coldest air we’ve had in almost a month. Most areas start out with temps in the single digits which are average morning lows for this time of year. A blustery northwest wind has wind chills in the minus teens in Duluth and much of northeast Minnesota as kids head out to the bus stop. You’ll want to break out the heavier duty winter gear and use the remote start if you’re fortunate to have one. Highs stay in teens across the region today with upper single digits by the Canadian border. Temps fall back into single digits to low teens tonight, then Saturday sees a quick return to more comfortable conditions with highs in mid-20s to low 30s under mostly cloudy skies.
Periods of lake effect snow will be possible for the South Shore today through Saturday with most of the accumulation staying along the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Gogebic and Ontonagon counties are in a Winter Weather Advisory until 6 am CST Saturday. Ironwood is near the 3” line with amounts increasing going east and a localized 6-8” possible in the Porcupine Mountains. You drop off to 1-3” in northern Iron County. Much of the rest of the South Shore will stay under an inch. The Arrowhead will also pick up under an inch of snow with a round sliding south of the international border Friday night through Saturday.
A warmer trend continues well into next week along with not much in terms of snow on the horizon. The extended outlook shows generally above average temperatures through February 29th, so it’s very possible that our one cold day today will be the last day this cold for the rest of the month.
