Justin Liles: Flirting with record warmth Wednesday
This has been a crazy winter. We’ve seen more periods of freezing rain and rain then we’ve had snow. We are approaching February in two more days, and we haven’t even had 20” of snow yet. To make things even stranger is Wednesday many communities around the region will be flirting with record highs. A significant surge in warmth across the upper middle third of our country is likely going to see temperatures in the mid to upper 40s and a stray 50° temperature or higher is possible in our southern viewing area. It’s also going to be breezy; this will create rapid snowmelt around the region.
Our current snowpack in Duluth is only 4” of snow. Therefore, run off along with little snowpack is expected by the end of the week. Warmer than average temperatures will continue well into next week. More 40s to start the week are likely. It doesn’t appear as if we’ll see much precipitation during this time frame. There is chance for some light snow late Monday into Tuesday. Our next round of cold weather doesn’t look to arrive until around Valentines Day. Take it easy on the lakes if planning an ice fishing trip during this warm spell.
