Justin Liles: Plunging temperatures and lake effect snow
Our first taste of snowfall has fallen and now we can say winter is officially here. Most areas picked up a quick 1”-3” of snow. There are some places that have picked up more along the North Shore and South Shore.
Northwesterly winds are taking over this week. This means two things are going to happen this week. The first will be a surge of cold air that is going to drop us well below average. By the end of the week, high temperatures will be in the teens and overnight lows will be in the single digits. Gusty northwest winds will likely make overnight lows feel well below zero. This includes Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday. Now because winds will be out of the north-northwest all week, lake-effect snow is likely to continue for the Ashland, Iron Counties, and the U.P. of Michigan. For the most part it will be rather light, but it will likely drop enough light snow to make road conditions slick in these areas over the holidays. Thursday night into Friday when even colder air moves in and interacts with the very warm water of Lake Superior. By this time, we may even see some sea smoke on Lake Superior. This cold looks to spread into next week.
