Justin Liles: Severe storms likely this evening
A surface low is set to move northeast out of the plains and into Minnesota this evening. Due to the hot nature of our environment and the high humidity, numerous strong storms are possible tonight. The biggest threats will be large hail and damaging winds. Hail may reach 2” in diameter or larger. This is tennis ball sized hail or bigger. Damaging winds over 70 mph are possible too. Widespread power outages, along with down trees are the biggest threat. The areas of biggest concern will be east central Minnesota which include southern Carlton and into Pine County.
This will then flow into northwest Wisconsin late tonight. There is a threat of seeing some late afternoon strong storms toward Brainerd and Aitkin County. Showers will likely linger into the early Tuesday morning hours and begin to wind down by sunrise or shortly after. Cooler weather will fall in behind the storms the rest of the week as winds turn off the lake. Sunshine does look to hold strong this holiday weekend.
