Lea Zmurko:  Finally! Some flakes fall in the Northland.

January 9: Morning clouds ahead of the afternoon snow

Temperatures will climb into the mid-twenties today as snow arrives. The region will see light accumulation continue through the weekend.

Winds will move in from the south as temperatures remained elevated overnight in the teens. The warm air advection is favorable for the incoming system as we finally are expecting some widespread snow.

The morning commute will be cloudy with temperatures in the mid-teens but by the mid-morning light snow will start up across the northwest quadrant of Minnesota and continue to move eastward.

Snowfall accumulation will vary between 0.5 – 2” with the greater amounts landing across the western portions of the Northland. The system will start to lose strength as it crosses eastward so less than an inch is favorable to fall for northern Wisconsin.

A few clippers will continue to cross this weekend adding to the totals, snowfall rates remain slow but steady as they continue through Sunday. More accumulation will land along the South Shore by the start of next week.

Cold air will be widespread by Monday as highs return to the single digits and windchills drop to twenty below
