Lea Zmurko: It’s a frigid Friday!

January 3: Cold and clear

Feeling frosted for the first Friday of the year as temperatures stay in the single digits and wind chills remain in the negatives.

Waking up to brisk wind chills that will continue to dominate the Northland all weekend long. Winds from the northwest persist at 10-15 mph with gusts of 25 mph especially along the North Shore.

Lake effect snow showers will remain consistent as they have been targeting the South Shore since the start of the new year. An additional 1-3 inches is possible for the northern portions of Iron County and greater amounts will fall across the Upper Peninsula. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in place through Saturday morning as the snow showers persist.

The rest of the Northland will stay cold and dry as high pressure remains overhead. As pressure gradients increase, cold advection will enhance, and the wind speeds will strengthen. As a result, the windchills could fall as low as -35 degrees on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
