Lea Zmurko: Storms marching in this afternoon.

August 29: Evening storms across the Northland

Storms and some severe weather across the Northland this afternoon. The key hazards include damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall.

Waking up to some showers and isolated thunderstorms moving across northern Minnesota, and plenty of broken cloud coverage ahead of the system along the North Shore. Lots of cloud coverage can be expected across the Northland today with temperatures in the mid-70s.

There will be a chain of storms making a pass across the Northland this afternoon and evening. Along with some thunderstorms, severe weather is possible with damaging winds, large hail and heavy rain as the key threats. There is still a potential for flash flooding hazards in some low-lying areas. Heavy rain is anticipated across northern Cass, Itasca, and southern Koochiching County. The risk for a tornado formation remains low, 2-5% chance, but cannot be completely ruled out.

The timing for severe weather will start in the midafternoon around 2PM for northern Minnesota and then shift into central and eastern Minnesota and across northwestern Wisconsin by the early evening hours as it tracks eastward and clears out by 11PM tonight.

Once this storm clears overnight, dry weather will move in for a stretch into next week. A few quick evening showers may pop up on Saturday evening in northern Minnesota, but otherwise conditions remain bright and seasonable.
