Brandon Weatherz: Starting the week with near record warmth
Our Monday starts off milder than yesterday with temps in 20s and 30s, then a warm front passes today and pushes temps within a couple degrees of daily records in mid-50s to low 60s. Today’s record high in Duluth is 60 set in 1902. We’ll also enjoy mostly sunny skies. Tonight is mostly cloudy and mild with lows near and above freezing.
A cold front passes going into Tuesday with cooler air arriving from the northwest, but highs still range from near 50 by International Falls to low 60s from Moose Lake to Ashland. Wednesday will be a touch cooler with mid-40s to mid-50s, and a northeast wind develops to keep areas near Lake Superior cooler.
Thursday is mostly cloudy with highs in the 40s. There’s a slight chance for rain to reach into northwest Wisconsin, but the better chance stays south of the Northland. Friday ends the week dry in the 40s. A system passing to our north will trigger a cool down through the weekend with highs staying in the 30s by Sunday. The system will also bring a chance for some light snow or wintry mix on Saturday. What would linger on Sunday would be lake effect for the South Shore.
Overall, the forecast will continue our snowless trend. We are now at the point that it would be Duluth’s least snowy season on record even if we picked up normal snowfall for the rest of the spring. With 18.7” through March 10th, normal snowfall through May would bring us to 36.3” which is below the least snowy record of 36.5” in 1980-1981.
