Brandon Weatherz: Messy system adds rain and ice today
Our Monday starts off with a fresh blanket of snow across the region accompanied by steady snow and blustery winds. Plows are hard at work, but most DOT reports are snow covered this morning, and the roads less traveled may be impassable.
A Blizzard Warning is in effect for the North Shore of Lake County and Cook County until 7 pm Tuesday where additional snow of 9-12″ inches” is expected. Ice accumulation up to 0.2″ is possible, and winds gust as high as 40 mph. The rest of northern Minnesota and Douglas County are in a Winter Storm Warning until 7 pm Tuesday with additional snow of 5-9″ and ice accumulation of around 0.1″. Winds gusting to 35 mph could bring periods of whiteout conditions here. For most of northwest Wisconsin, the Winter Storm Warning will expire at 1 pm today rain gradually takes over from the south. Additional snow until then will generally be around 1″ with 0.1″ of ice possible.
The bands of heaviest snow will be moving from south to north across the region through the morning with travel remaining very difficult. We’ll see the transition from snow to wintry mix and rain take over much of northwest Wisconsin through the day and enter eastern Minnesota this evening and overnight when ice could add to the difficult travel conditions.
Tuesday will feature winds shifting out of the northwest as the weather system starts to move across Lake Superior. The wind shift will transition lake influence from the North Shore to the South Shore and introduce cooler air that will turn the morning’s mix of precip types back to snow from the west through the day. Most areas should be done with accumulation by 7 pm Tuesday with light snow possibly lingering near and north of the Iron Range Tuesday night into Wednesday.
