Brandon Weatherz: Warm weekend for Minnesota Fishing Opener
Our Friday starts frosty with much of the Arrowhead and northwest Wisconsin in upper 20s to low 30s. It’ll shape up to be a warmer day overall, especially for the Twin Ports and other shoreline communities that have been stuck with a cool lake wind all week. A breezy west wind will allow temps to top off in the 60s for much of the Northland. A passing cold front will bring increasing clouds and scattered showers filling out northern Minnesota from the west through the morning. The afternoon and evening will then feature sporadic thunderstorms across the Northland. Some storms may produce moments of heavy rain, small hail, and gusty winds. An isolated storm may have gusts surpassing 55 mph from east central Minnesota into northwest Wisconsin. Have a plan to put outdoor plans on pause if necessary.
Showers thin out this evening and overnight with skies clearing. Lows generally stay above frost territory this time in mid-30s to low 40s. Our Saturday features highs ranging from low 60s near Ironwood to mid-70s looking west near Brainerd with mid-60s in the Twin Ports. Skies will be mostly sunny for the Minnesota Fishing Opener. Clouds increase from the north in the afternoon with a few showers grazing the Canadian border. Scattered showers will then be possible for northeast Minnesota into northwest Wisconsin Saturday evening and overnight.
By Sunday, a low chance for isolated showers and thunderstorms will hang around in Northwest Wisconsin where a cold front will be draped. Despite the “cold” front, highs on Mother’s Day will be in the 70s for most with partly cloudy skies. A breezy northwest wind will once again spread the warmth down the hill closer to Lake Superior in the Twin Ports. We’ll be back to “cooler by the lake” conditions starting Monday and continuing for much of next week as an east wind once again becomes rather consistent.
