Brandon Weatherz: Tracking rain and warmth for the weekend
A weather system spinning in Saskatchewan will be our main weather influencer this weekend. It sends a surge of above average warmth, as well as a couple rounds of rain chances. First, Friday starts with areas of locally dense fog that clear by mid-morning. Scattered showers sweep the Northland from west to east through the morning with rain thinning out by the early afternoon. We’ll see isolated storms in the afternoon and evening with the greatest chance found near the warm front that will be draped across northwest Wisconsin. Highs today range from low 80s near Moose Lake to upper 60s near Ely, then an east wind will keep lakeside areas in the 50s.
Tonight stays very mild with “cooler by the lake” conditions lingering. Lows stay in low 50s to low 60s away from Lake Superior with 40s along the shorelines. Scattered showers and thunderstorms march across northern Minnesota overnight into early Saturday morning. Similar to today, the Twin Ports has the best chance of rain early in the day with isolated thunderstorms possible in the afternoon. The best chance for storms will follow a passing cold front which moves across the Arrowhead and northwest Wisconsin through the afternoon. Some storms may be capable of small hail and gusty winds. If a stray storm reaches severe strength, it should be east of Ashland.
