Brandon Weatherz: Heavy rain today and tonight
A potent and wet low pressure system will track from Nebraska this morning across Minnesota and into southern Ontario by Wednesday morning. Heavy rain will be possible, leading to a flood watch in effect for all of northeast Minnesota and Douglas County and Burnett County in Wisconsin until 7 am Wednesday. The highest rain totals are expected in north central Minnesota where areas of 3-4″ are possible. Widespread accumulation of at least 1.5″ fills out northeast Minnesota and crosses into northwest Wisconsin. Amounts generally drop off closer to one inch moving east, but thunderstorms capable of heavy rain and high localized totals are possible across the Northland.
Rain takes over from the southwest through the morning, then widespread wet weather continues through today and tonight. Severe thunderstorms are possible with an isolated storm capable of damaging winds near the Twin Ports and along the North Shore. East central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin also have the wind threat, and in addition, may see large hail and a stray tornado. The risk for all severe hazards increase looking south of the Northland with the area of greatest concern today reaching across much of Iowa into southeast Minnesota and southwest Wisconsin.
Rain moves northeast on Wednesday, but scattered showers may linger with additional accumulation remaining rather light, allowing flooding concerns to wane after 7 am. Areas of dense fog are an issue around the Head of Lake Superior Tuesday morning, and fog may prove to be stubborn in these areas today. An east wind ramps up past 20 mph through the day and keeps temps immediately near the lake in the mid-40s. Highs elsewhere range from mid-50s to mid-60s. Lows tonight will be in mid-40s to low 50s. A breezy east wind shifts out of the west overnight as we find ourselves on the south side of the departing weather system.
Wednesday will then feature a strong west wind and highs ranging from near 50 north to mid-60s south. Scattered showers are most widespread in the morning. Thursday is warmer with mid-50s to low 70s and a low chance for showers. Rain returns on Friday, along with a strong east wind. As of now, a low chance for rain hangs around in the region on Saturday. Sunday should be dry with a lake breeze.
