Brandon Weatherz: Showers and thunderstorms end the week
Our Thursday starts with localized fog in the higher elevation areas of Duluth and southward on I-35. Be ready for visibility to drop during your morning commute. Fog burns away by mid-morning with mostly sunny skies winning out today. Highs range from low 60s to mid-70s with mid-60s in the Twin Ports. A northwest wind gradually shifts out of the east, allowing for temps near Lake Superior to take a hit in the late afternoon and evening. A stronger east wind ramps up tonight and tomorrow.
A front draped just south of Lake Superior is where isolated showers and thunderstorms may form this afternoon. A better chance for showers and thunderstorms arrives from the west Thursday night and fills out the Northland on Friday. We dry out from the southwest Friday night and stay generally drier on Saturday. Memorial Day Weekend will be rather pleasant. Some rain chances return to the region Sunday and Monday, but the greatest chance for showers will be in Wisconsin both days.
Friday will also feature a gusty east wind, keeping shoreline communities in the 40s. Highs away from Lake Superior will be in low 50s to mid-60s. Highs will generally be in the 60s Saturday through Monday. A breezy west wind on Saturday keeps temps rather uniform in the Twin Ports, then an east wind will keep temps near Lake Superior cooler on Sunday. Winds shift out of the north on Monday.
