Brandon Weatherz: Summery weekend ahead
Today marks the end of May, which makes Saturday the start of meteorological summer. It’ll shape up to be a rather summery weekend overall with seasonable warmth and a couple of rounds of rain to track. Our Friday begins with morning showers for eastern Minnesota into northwest Wisconsin near and ahead of a cold front. Rain chances will taper off west to east with the Twin Ports drying out in the morning, but showers and thunderstorms may linger in northwest Wisconsin this afternoon.
The front remains draped near the state line today with rain chances creeping north toward the Twin Ports again tonight, then rain exits the Northland to the east Saturday. Strong thunderstorms arrive from the west Sunday afternoon and evening. An isolated storm may be capable of large hail and gusty winds. Heavy rain and localized accumulation surpassing an inch are also possible. Rain amounts should increase looking west toward north central Minnesota. Those storms continue Sunday night and rain tapers off to the east Monday.
The cool spots today are along and south of a line from Hayward to Ironwood where lingering showers keep highs in the 60s. much of the rest of the Northland will see low to mid-70s. A southwest wind keeps Lake Superior’s cooling influence limited to the North Shore of Cook County and immediately along the South Shore.
Tonight features 50s for the Twin Ports and south where additional rain is possible, then clouds thin out looking north with temps falling into mid-40s near the Iron Range. Saturday sees highs into low to mid-70s across the Northland. Sunday will see areas away from Lake Superior well into the 70s. An east wind returns to keep lakeside areas cooler.
