Sabrina Ullman: Quiet New Year’s Eve
2024 will come to an end tonight with quiet weather in the Northland. Temperatures will be in the upper teens at midnight and drop a few degrees by morning. Overnight lows will range from 18 degrees in Ashland to 9 degrees in Bemidji.
A few flurries are possible tonight and on New Year’s Day, but snow accumulation is not expected. The exception is for areas along the South Shore as the lake-effect snow machine starts up again. Only an inch or two of lake-effect snow will accumulate with this round, but we could see more later this week.
The new year will begin with afternoon highs in the teens to low 20s. The cooling trend will continue for a few days. By Friday, highs will be in the single digits, and overnight lows will drop below zero. Temperatures will increase slightly by the end of the weekend.
Cooler weather will help with ice thickness on lakes, but widespread snow will not be in the forecast anytime this week.
