Sabrina Ullman: Slick conditions tonight into Monday

At long last, snow is arriving tonight and will stick around. A clipper will bring snow from west to east, becoming widespread by 10 pm.

This system will bring moisture in from Canada while a low-pressure system to our south brings in moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. Heavy snow is likely tonight into early Monday morning, which is expected to impact the morning commute. Most snow will exit the area by midday Monday, but we will see a few lingering flurries in the evening.

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for most of the Northland, in effect from 10 pm Sunday to 9 am Monday. Accumulations will be mostly 1-3 inches, but portions of the Northland near the lake will have higher amounts due to lake-effect snow.

Only around 20% of Lake Superior had ice last winter, and temperatures are currently in the mid-40s. Frigid air moving over these warm waters will let the Lake Superior Snow Machine ramp up, with the location of lake-effect snow depending on the wind.

The head of the lake had almost half an inch of lake-effect snow on Sunday afternoon, and we are going to see more over the next few days. The North Shore will have lake-effect snow enhancing snowfall totals on Monday. Starting Tuesday, the South Shore Snow Belt will have several days of lake-effect snow showers.

Overnight lows will be in the upper 20s to low 30s. Temperatures will rise to the mid to upper 30s by 10 am on Monday but then fall to the mid-20s to low 30s. A breezy northeast wind will become northwest in the afternoon.

Afternoon highs will gradually decline this week, with highs near 20 degrees by the weekend. The good news is that this will be ideal snow-making weather for ski hills.
