Sabrina Ullman: Variety of precipitation today
Patchy fog is likely this morning. A light and variable wind will become easterly in the afternoon and pick up speed in the evening as a low-pressure system enters northern Minnesota.
Precipitation chances will begin in the early afternoon. With afternoon highs in the mid to upper 30s, areas south of Drummond will see only rain at first. A wintry mix is likely near the Twin Ports, and areas near the international border will only have snow. Freezing rain may cause light ice accumulation in the Brainerd Lakes area.
As a cold front moves through in the evening, the precipitation type will change to snow throughout the Northland. Snow will continue into Monday, especially for areas along the North Shore.
Accumulations will be under two inches for areas south of the Twin Ports. In Duluth, the accumulation will be around an inch or two near the lake and three inches up the hill. Further north, accumulations will increase as you get closer to the international border with nine inches expected in International Falls. There will be a sharp gradient in snowfall totals for areas near the Iron Range.
A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for the North Shore portion of Cook County, in effect from noon Sunday to noon Monday. A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect on Sunday from 6 am to midnight for areas north of Duluth and Grand Rapids. Cass County is included in the advisory due to the risk of ice accumulation.
Once this system exits on Monday, we will have dry weather until the end of the week. An arctic blast will drop temperatures significantly on Wednesday with subzero temperatures expected on Wednesday night.
