While many avoided this week’s winter storm and stayed inside, others “seas-ed” the day by surfing on Lake Superior on Thursday.
“It’s just with the territory,” said surfer Blake Bailey. “If we’re going to be surfing, it’s going to be a storm.”
Bailey and his friends dealt with slick road conditions to drive up from Minneapolis for a special occasion.
“It was his birthday, and we both learned how to surf somewhere other than Lake Superior. And once we realized there was surfing in Lake Superior, we just surf whenever we can,” said surfer Noah Factor. “Wetsuit technology has really allowed us to get out there on super cold days like today. But yeah, we’re always having a blast up here. Every time we get out in the water, any time there’s any potential to get waves, it’s always a good time.”
At least a dozen other surfers gathered by the mouth of the Lester River to surf on Lake Superior. The surf was worth the cold.
“Today’s brutal. There’s ice chunks floating around out there,” said Bailey. “But It’s amazing. Just the energy that’s out there. It’s a good day.”
